Parakrama Weligamage PhD
Sri Lanka Agricultural Economics Association
Born and raised in the suburbs of Galle in the southern Sri Lanka, Parakrama Weligamage had his early education at Richmond College, Galle. He earned his B.Sc.Agriculture degree in from the University of Peradeniya. He began to work on academic research at the same university on socioeconomic aspects of natural resources and later moved to International Water Management Institute where he researched on irrigation investments, on food security, and on economics of smallholder farming systems till 2009. Parakrama earned his MSc in agricultural economics from the university of Peradeniya and his PhD from Washington State University.
He has taught agricultural economics at the University of Peradeniya since 2004. He also taught graduate courses at Kelaniya and Sri Jayawardenapura universities. Parakrama is former President of the Social Sciences Section of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (2012), and was the co-coordinator for the 12th International Conference on Sri Lanka Studies (2010).
His most noteworthy contribution to the profession is the conceptualization and management of SLAGECONR, that spearheaded the entry of the Sri Lankan agricultural economists to the information super-highway
