Piya Abeygunawardena

Born and raised in the country of low-grown tea in the valleys of Nilwala River in southern Sri Lanka,  Piya Abeygunawardena earned his B.Sc.Agriculture degree from f the University of Peradeniya in 1980.  He earned his PhD in agricultural economics from Texas A&M University in 1986. His pioneering contribution to promote agricultural economics as a profession in Sri Lanka is signified by his vision to establish and sustain SAEA.  His contribution to promote enviornmental economics as a researcher, teacher and an academic administrator is very well recognized. He introduced first-ever graduate programs in Sri Lanka on environmental economics and natural resource management at the University of Peradeniya. He was associate professor and  head of agricultural economics department at the University of Peradeniya before he joined Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1994.  He is currently professor and associate director at Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture/Texas A&M University
